5. ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ – 1992
In Michael Mann’s visually stunning adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper’s novel, Day-Lewis played the main character Hawkeye/Nathaniel Poe, a frontiersman and adopted son of Mohican chief Chingachgook. Day-Lewis earned more attention for his method acting in this film, spending weeks learning how to live in the woods with no food, and training to use a long rifle, learning how to skin animals, and how to build tools and canoes out of wood. Although he didn’t earn an Academy Award nomination for this role, many view the film as one of his best performances.
