Game Changers 2014: Alex Turner

Every Arctic Monkeys album has hit No. 1 in the U.K., but 2014’s AM is their first taste of similar success with U.S. audiences. “It’s very rare for a band to come out so big, then have another massive moment,” says Laurence Bell, co-founder of Domino Records. “It reminds me of the Stones.” In a speech at the 2014 Brit Awards, where the band picked up the award for best album, Turner even delivered a swaggering defense of rock ’n’ roll. At the end he quipped, “Invoice me for the microphone if you need to,” then dropped it, like a badass.

As long as one of the biggest names in the industry doesn’t give a crap about the industry, rock ’n’ roll is alive and well.

FIT FACT: “Sometimes you just wish it were the 1970s and you could have a beer belly,” Turner told BBC Newsnight. “But now you’ve got to go to the gym and stuff.”
