All along, Tristan Walker felt that the specific grooming needs of African-American men were being overlooked by mainstream brands’ one-size-fits-all approach to shaving.
“For 14 years I put a depilatory cream on my face so I wouldn’t have to use a razor,“ Walker says.
Finally, in 2013, he resigned from his enviable full-time gig as Foursquare’s head of business development and set up his own enterprise, Walker and Company. Its flagship brand: Bevel, the first and only shaving system for men and women with coarse, curly hair.
“I realized I should only be working on something that’s authentic to me,” he says.
The reviews have been glowing. “A gentleman in the Army wrote that for as long as he could remember, razor bumps had been part of his uniform—but no longer are. Another user said he’d worn a beard to work for 15 years because he was nervous about products on the market, and thinks it hindered his career. He thanked us for changing that.”
FIT FACT: Walker lifts five days a week, in addition to cardio, and does his best “never to eat past 7 p.m. on weekdays.”
