It’s time to put the Millennium Falcon back into hyperdrive.
Filming has started on the latest movie in the Star Wars universe, a standalone “anthology film,” in Lucasfilm parlance, following the exploits of Han Solo and his loyal co-pilot Chewbacca.
The movie will feature the “adventure-filled past of the iconic scoundrel and everyone’s favorite Wookiee, and will explore the duo’s adventures before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, including their early encounters with that other card-playing rogue from a galaxy far, far away, Lando Calrissian,” according to a new synopsis of the film released on the official Star Wars blog.
To mark the start of production, directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord (directors of The Lego Movie) shared a photo of the main cast—and themselves—looking thrilled to be working on the latest flick from a galaxy far, far away.
The shot includes Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo), Woody Harrelson (Solo’s mentor), Joonas Suotamo (in his Chewbacca costume), Donald Glover (Lando Calrissian), and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (who’s playing a motion-captured female droid). Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke (pictured) and Westworld actress Thandie Newton (absent) are also in the film in undisclosed roles:

“Watching such inspired people from all over the world, with such unique voices, come together for the sole purpose of making art, is nothing short of miraculous,” said Lord and Miller in a statement from Disney about the start of shooting. “We can’t think of anything funny to say, because we just feel really moved, and really lucky.”
Miller showed off the “first shot” of production on Twitter, revealing the working title (a.k.a. the one they use to keep plot details as secret as possible): Star Wars: Red Cup. (Not that the working title won’t fuel its own speculation, of course, but at least we know Miller and Lord are keeping things casual on set.)

The first Star Wars standalone movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, was a smash success with critics and at the box office, bringing in stellar reviews and over $1 billion worldwide.
The untitled Han Solo film, directed by Phil Miller and Chris Lord, will be released May 25, 2018. In the meantime, the next Star Wars-related film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson (Looper), will hit theaters on December 15, 2017.
