It was a busy Super Bowl. Weiner dogs stampeded through a meadow, a herd of sheep sang Queen (also in a meadow), and Christopher Walken played with sock puppets. An unsuspecting Nebraskan lawyer even earned the hearts of a nation, earning the “Hot Ref” nickname for his bicep definition (#CurlsforGirls, right?). Also: Football! And Beyoncé!
So we’ll forgive you if you were too busy reloading on Michelob Ultra—that was a commercial, too—to catch all the new superhero trailers that dropped. (Jason Bourne isn’t technically a superhero, but Matt Damon looks pretty jacked in the trailer for Jason Bourne, which was also revealed.) That’s why we’re here. Presented in order of premiere date:
If you enjoy the casual violence of Marvel movies but find yourself craving something more in the way of sexual content, graphic nudity, and outright snark, then this is the movie for you! (Out Feb. 12.)
Captain America: Civil War
This isn’t technically an Avengers film, as the nerdy guy at the gym will remind you, but rather the third installment of the Captain America movie franchise based off one of Marvel’s most contentious comic-book arcs. The big reveal for this one, though, is Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), who will get his own movie in 2018. (Out May 6)
Hey, if Aaron Rodgers didn’t make an appearance in the Super Bowl, at least his girlfriend did! (Sorry, Packers fans.) But we seriously are looking forward to this one, particularly because Bryan Singer did a nice job with X-Men: Days of Future Past. And if Hugh “Wolverine” Jackman can’t be in it, at least we’ll see Olivia Munn, Jennifer Lawrence, and Sophie Turner. (Out May 27.)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Do the heroes in a half-shell count as “super”? (Sure, why not.) Who is the giant brain in a tank? (KRANG!) Will anyone even see this movie? (Probably, because America!) (Out June 3.)
Independence Day: Resurgence
What is it with the colon-dependent titles these days? (Better yet, is there a word for colon-dependent? We wanna say it’s “colonic,” but somehow that seems wrong.) Also: We know there aren’t technically any superheroes in this one, but there is Jeff Goldblum and at least one Hemsworth (Liam, obviously), which sort of counts. (Out June 24.)
