If you wear tight compression shorts while you work out, your junk may be suffering.
“The benefits of compression wear are generally negligible—but the potential problems aren’t,” says Philip Skiba, Ph.D., sports medicine director at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL.
“Tight clothing that doesn’t breathe much holds moisture in the folds around the groin,” he explains. “It’s the classic setup for the skin fungus tinea cruris, or jock itch, and for ringworm as well.”
And compression can bring its own risks. “Tight gear, especially shorts, can cause pinched nerves, as we see in soldiers who wear tight, heavily loaded belts,” says Skiba.
Heartburn can also result from tight, high-riding shorts that push on the abs and force up stomach contents.
