As you probably guessed, stage N2 is a slightly deeper sleep than stage N1. From the outside, it’s hard to tell the difference between stage 1 and 2 sleep but brainwave activity is different and includes sudden bursts of activity called sleep spindles. “Stage 2 actually comprises the majority of our sleep,” says Muehlbach. As adults, it makes up 45 to 50 percent of our total sleep, which can increase to 60 percent as we age.
