In stage N3, brainwave activity slows. This is when we produce delta waves, which indicate deep sleep. During this stage, there is little eye or muscle movement. “It’s the hardest level of sleep to wake someone up out of,” says Muehlbach. “If you tried to wake somebody up, they might wake up feeling very groggy or confused.” That time when you woke up freaked out because you didn’t know where you were? Blame stage 3 sleep. “A bad stage to wake up out of is stage 3 sleep because you’re going to be kind of groggy, confused,” says Muehlbach. Fortunately, as the night progresses, stage 3 sleep reduces, making it less likely we’d wake from this deep sleep in the morning.
