Preparation
When adopting a dog you will have to stock up on some essential products before the dog even arrives. First, you will need to buy a nice plush dog bed. When the dog finally arrives take him by the collar and ask him to go to his bed as you walk him over to it. Once there, have him sit and lay down. Practice this over and over with the leash and collar until he starts to associate the word with the object.
One thing many new owners do wrong is buy way too many toys for the pup. In the beginning purchase a couple of hard marrow bones, a durable Kong, or some stuffing-free soft toys and see which ones he gravitates to. When he picks his favorite toy, you’ll know what to buy the next time you’re at the pet store. If you plan on crate training your pup be sure to purchase a collapsable one so you can take it on any future road trips.
Finally, you need to puppy-proof you home because dogs get into things a lot, some of these things could be dangerous or even fatal. Below is a list of common household poisons for dogs. Hide these objects!
- Grapes/raisins – can affect the kidneys
- Chocolate – the darker the chocolate the worse it is
- Silica bags – causes severe dehydration
- Advil or any over-the-counter medications
- Plants – most plants will make a dog sick
- Flea/Tick meds – this is a double edge sword because it can be useful
- Avocado – causes vomiting and diarrhea
- Macadamia nuts
- Onions
- Pitted fruits – can cause cyanide poisoning or intestinal blockage
