Taking a moment to recognize what you’re feeling is a way to create space — an important step on the path to fixing a sour mood. An alternative is faking your way out, making a conscious choice to act as though you were in a good mood. This can work to a certain extent. You make yourself exercise or go out with your friends even though you don’t really feel like it, and your brain might catch on to environmental clues and your mood improves. “It can be helpful to fake it, but it’s more helpful to get a little space from it first and then flip it,” says Goldstein.
