Wear insect-repelling clothes
Apparel that’s treated with the chemical permethrin is proven to repell ticks, and works through 50 washings, says David Brassard, a Virginia-based entomologist who’s studied ticks for 20 years. In a recent study, hikers wearing permethrin-treated sneaks, socks, shorts, and T-shirts were up to 74 times less likely to have a tick bite than those without it.
