“Be skeptical about commercial mental training problems that claim to improve your general intelligence,” says Stephen Madigan. “Such programs do improve your working memory for the specific kinds of experimental tasks that they use, but the evidence that this transfers to other kinds of information-processing tasks or to mental ability in general is, at present, weak and inconsistent.” Madigan adds that there also appear to be problems with keeping up those new working memory skills over time.
