How It’s Regulated
Regulation of dog food is somewhat complicated. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) sets the nutrient requirements for basic, over-the-counter dog food. Their goals are to safeguard the health of animals and their owners, protect consumers, and level the playing field within the animal food industry. AAFCO does not have any regulatory authority. If questions arise about the safety of dog foods — such as with raw food — the FDA investigates.
