Spot Toxins With Your iPhone
There are a host of toxic chemicals that are all too common in our daily moisturizers, sunscreens, shaving cream, and deodorants. But let’s face it: When you’re actually out shopping for these products, will you really remember that the ingredient DMDM hydantoin releases cancer-causing formaldehyde or that triclosan messes with your thyroid?
Luckily, shopping for safe, nontoxic grooming products just got a lot easier. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has turned its trusted Skin Deep Cosmetics Database into the Skin Deep Mobile app, which lets you access safety info about more than 72,000 products, 2,000 brands, and 9,000 ingredients on your Apple or Android phone. Simply scan a product’s bar code, and the app spits out a safety rating from zero (super safe) to 10 (extremely toxic) based on the latest research on every ingredient in the product. The app also stores your scans for future reference, lets you create lists of favorite products, and offers tips for finding the safest nontoxic skin-care and hair-care products, shaving supplies, and more. The best part: The app is free. [For iPhone or Android; ewg.org]Back to top
