How Your Gut Can Tell What Diet Is Best for Weight Loss


Not all diets are created equal—you’ve got Paleo, Whole30, and restrictive diets galore—and neither are human bodies. So why expect one diet to be the perfect solution to all our individual weight loss and health needs? 

Thanks to researchers from Chalmers University of Technology, you soon may be able to get custom diet recommendations based on your gut bacteria (yes, the bacteria in your gut.) The team developed a mathematical calculation capable of predicting how you’ll respond to a modified diet—all based on how the microbiome in your gut is composed. In the human digestive system, there can be up to 1,000 different types of bacteria and microorganisms that take part in metabolism. This composition varies greatly among us, and aside from weight loss success, can dictate our risk for some diseases like type 2 diabetes, obesity, depression, even how our body responds to cancer treatments, according to the researchers.

Scientists haven’t been able to explain this causal relationship—until now. By using a computational platform called CASINO (Community And Systems-level Interactive Optimization, not the place where you lose all your money), scientists have exposed how your intestinal bacteria interacts during metabolism, enabling them to one day offer “tailored diet advice” like how you can best lose weight. The researchers also believe their research will make it easier for physicians to identify overweight patients who are at higher risk of diseases like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
