Sometimes it’s more than your muscles that are getting in the way of your lifting progress. To avoid the dreaded “1-rep max” on the bench, Men’s Fitness editor Sam DeHority suggests squeezing a stress ball between sets. Not only does it feel good in your hands, it helps to distract you from any anxiety over your next set. The result? More reps and less money on therapy sessions (okay, maybe just more reps, but that’s still pretty damn good).
