And loading up on proteins isn’t necessarily the key, either. Too much protein, and your insulin spikes—and your body will convert it into carbs. Not keto. Dairy, however is keto—for the most part. Again, you’ve got to be careful. Butter, cheese, and yogurt are all keto-friendly, as long as you go for products that are low in lactose. Definitely avoid low-fat and fat-free dairy altogether; when they remove the fat, they most always replace it with sugar. And stay away from milk! It’s full of lactose.
You can never get enough green, leafy veggies. Fruits, on the other hand, are called “nature’s candy” for a reason. Portion control is the key here. For meats, make sure to stick with 100 percent real, unprocessed, non-glazed, and uncured meat. And sugar is a carb! So you should always avoid carbs that are processed, refined, and high in sugar (like most pasta).
Finding sugar-free snacks is relatively easy, but most aren’t keto-friendly. They use sugar alternatives for sweetening. Or they’re loaded with carbs to make your belly think it’s full. They’re filled with junk, and low on macronutrients. There is, however, a better way to snack between meals and get the calories you need while staying within the strict keto diet.
