The museum’s collection features more than 400 intrauterine devices. The Dalkon Shield, pictured here, illustrates one of the darker sides of contraceptives’ history. Shaped like a horseshoe crab, the device caused pelvic infections, septic abortions, and infections in hundreds of thousands of women. It was implicated in the deaths of more than a dozen women.
