Life Advice From Lucas Neff

Life Advice From Lucas Neff

If you don’t know who Lucas Neff is, you should. For one, he’s the star of the hit show Raising Hope, which returns for its fourth season this Friday on FOX. The show’s a comedy about a guy named Jimmy Chance, who has a one night stand with a serial killer and gets her pregnant before she’s sent to death row. He’s then left to raise his daughter with his “whack-job, lunatic family,” and hilariousness ensues.

Another reason you should know Neff: He’s about to be all over the place. Aside from filming upcoming movies, he’s writing a book, doing standup, running triathlons, and to top it all off, has a great sense of style. He sat down with us and gave us some advice on how to keep it all together.

On going with the flow

It’s time to stop stressing about the future and over-planning. Neff’s outlook is that life is “an intuitive process.” What’s that mean? “I do what I feel like is the right thing to do at any given moment.” He credits that to his background doing improv, which is less about thinking and more about reacting to whatever comes your way.

On working out and eating healthy

Even though these days he’s running ultramarathons and even does some CrossFit, Lucas Neff used to be overweight. “I was big kid. I weighed more when I was 13 than I do now,” he says. “I ate a lot, I ate too much.” He lost the weight through cutting back on junk food, running, and swimming up to four miles a day. Still, he doesn’t restrict himself all the time. “I say I’m healthy with myself, and I’m fun with my friends. If you want to go out and get a burger, I’ll eat a burger.”

On fashion

While he admits he’s dropped some dough on a Tom Ford suit, fashion is more about making a good impression for Neff. “Considering how lasting first impressions are, I think it’s probably in your best interest to exercise your ability to control and influence that impression. Not in a false way, but in the way that clothing can illuminate more accurately who you are as a person.” So what’s his advice when it comes to getting dressed in the morning? “Don’t worry about what other people think.”

On watching Raising Hope…even if you think it’s meant for women

Just in case you were thinking of not tuning in because Raising Hope is a show your girlfriend loves, Neff’s got news for you: “Grow up, it’s 2013,” he says. “Watch it, it’s awesome. You won’t regret it.” We agree.
