Breathe Life Into Your Run
Breathing rhythmically in a 2:1 pattern (two strides per breath) takes stress off respiratory musclesand reduces fatigue compared with using a 2:2 pattern (breathing in for two steps and out for two steps), say University of Utah researchers. How so? Inhaling or exhaling on the same foot every time puts more stress on the leg, ankle, and foot. “The 2:1 ratio used by most experienced runners may well reduce the workload on the respiratory muscles (especially the diaphragm) and promote stamina in endurance runs,” says study honcho Dennis Bramble, Ph.D.
