Over 60 and Badass

For some guys, turning 60 means a 15 percent discount at Applebee’s and winters in Boca Raton — but these five famous men are living proof that life doesn’t end once you become eligible for Social Security.

James Caan

Age: 70

Before he made a name for himself as hot-tempered gangster Santino ‘Sonny’ Corleone in the 1972 classic The Godfather, Caan was already known as a hot-blooded New Yorker who was willing to give you a piece of his mind at the drop of a hat. To add to his man-cred, the tough-guy actor earned a black belt in karate and spent several years on the pro rodeo tour during his early acting days. Even today, at 70, the fiery Caan is still asserting his presence. Case in point, a year ago the veteran actor stormed off the set of director David O. Russell’s Nailed after he got into an argument with Russell over a scene involving a cookie.

Badass Quote: “When I played three-on-three with 20-year-olds when I was 50, I didn’t care if the guy was 6-foot-8—I threw the elbow.”

Chuck Norris

Age: 70

What can you say about Chuck that hasn’t already been said (or posted on the Internet)? From Missing in Action to Walker, Texas Ranger, he’s one of the baddest badasses in Hollywood. But Norris is one of the few action stars who actually has the skills to backup his big-screen persona. In fact, the roundhouse-kicking demi-god is a six-time world karate champion, the first man ever in the Western Hemisphere to be awarded an 8th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and he served in the U.S. Air Force before launching his acting career. At 70, you would think Norris would be taking it easy in a La-Z-Boy recliner. Not the case. Last year, the action star published Black Belt Patriotism: How to Reawaken America. Who needs a bailout when you got Chuck Norris on your side?

Badass Quote: “Men are like steel. When they lose their temper, they lose their worth.”

R. Lee Ermey

Age: 66

As Gunny Sergeant Hartman in the 1987 classic Full Metal Jacket, R. Lee Ermey offered the best advice any guy can ever receive: “Sound off like you got a pair!” But it wasn’t purely good acting that landed Emery the iconic role. The tougher-than-a-two-dollar-steak hellraiser spent 11 years in the U.S. Marine Corps before retiring due to injuries received during his military tours. Since launching his acting career in the late ’70s, Emery has appeared in over 60 films in addition to hosting the popular History Channel documentary series Mail Call. The hard-edged Ermey even served a stint as the first celebrity spokesperson for Glock firearms.

Badass Quote: “I firmly believe that you live and learn, and if you don’t learn from past mistakes, then you need to be drug out and shot.”

Harrison Ford

Age 67

Harrison Ford may not have served in the military or have a deep-seated love for firearms, but the Indiana Jones star defines badass on so many levels. For starters, he spent his early years as a master carpenter before landing the career-making role as Han Solo in 1977’s Star Wars. He’s also known for doing his own stunts and is a private pilot who owns several small aircrafts, which he has used to fly search and rescue missions for stranded hikers near his ranch in Wyoming. But perhaps his biggest show of force was resurrecting the Indiana Jones franchise at the ripe, young age of 65.

Badass Quote: “I grew up in the Midwest. You don’t ask what a person’s religion is, you don’t ask what their politics are, you don’t ask how much money they make and I pretty much still have that attitude about it.”

Clint Eastwood

Age 79

He may be 79 years old but Clint Eastwood still has the ability to make guys crumble with his crap-inducing stare. Not convinced that this grandpa still packs a lethal punch? Consider that it’s been 22 years since he played the iconic Dirty Harry and the big-screen veteran is still starring in macho roles, including the recent Gran Torino, where Eastwood plays a disgruntled Korean War vet who takes on a gang of Asian thugs. Not a surprising role considering the tough-as-nails star served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. What is surprising is the fact that the gun-loving Eastwood is also a vegan.

Badass Quote: “I tried being reasonable, I didn’t like it.”
