Quick Tip: Pump up the Volume

A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research looked at the effect music had on training. Researchers had 20 college-age men perform the bench press for reps and three reps of squat jumps for height. In one workout, subjects were allowed to play their own music selections while training—in another workout, no music was played.

Ultimately, performance on the bench press did not vary significantly with or without music, but the rates of force and velocity development for the squat jump were greater when music was played. The researchers concluded that self-selected music might enhance power production.
