Turns out man’s best friend provides more than companionship. People who have pets, especially dogs, have less risk of heart disease. Looking at a huge pool of past studies on pet ownership and cardiovascular health, researchers at Baylor University determined that dog and cat owners generally have lower blood pressure and cholesterol, handle stress better, and are more physically active than pet-less people – all factors that help stave off heart disease. Still, according to lead study author Dr. Glenn Levine, if you’re already at high risk, simply adding Fido to the family won’t save you. Exercise, dial in your diet, and quit smoking to ensure your healthiest heart.
