Lasers
If you’re in the market for results, you’ll want to make a beeline to the medi-spa for laser treatments. Removing hair, evening skin tone, and increasing collagen are just some of the ways lasers can be used to improve patient’s skin.
“The science behind lasers is really strong,” says Dr. Hollmig, who uses them extensively in his practice. The gold standard for tightening skin is ablative Fraxel laser, which creates thousands of tiny holes in the skin’s surface that fill with collagen as they heal, and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is typically used to remove sun spots and improve skin tone. However, he’s most excited about using BroadBand Light (BBL), a specialized form of IPL that isn’t technically a laser. BBL is more precise when treating hyperpigmentation, which is especially important for patients with dark skin tones.
He understands that patients are often afraid to make the leap from gentle spa treatments to medical grade procedures, such as laser treatments.
“IPL gets a bad rap because it’s not heavily regulated and horror stories because of bad treatments, lightening or darkening of skin,” says Hollmig. But in the hands of a trained physician who knows how to use the instrument, BBL can eliminate all sunspots, he says.
Verdict: The gold standard in anti-aging, but choose your laser technician wisely.
