Here’s even more proof that too much sugar is bad for you: A new study found that adults who get 10 to 25 percent of their daily calories from added sugars – found in soda, candy, and most processed foods – had 30 percent greater chance of dying from heart disease. People whose diet was more than 25 percent added sugar nearly tripled their death risk.
According to this study, most of us fall into one of these groups. Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed the health and diets of more than 30,000 adults and found that 71 percent got more than 10 percent of their daily calories from added sugars. That’s way too much. The American Heart Association advises men to consume no more than 150 calories of added sugar a day. So if you eat 2,500 calories a day, that means 6 percent or less should come from added sugars.
Remember, natural sugars from fruit, fruit juices, milk, and dairy products aren’t the problem here. It’s the refined table sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, and other high-calorie sweeteners packed into everything from to Snickers to barbecue sauce that are killing us.
