Spice recalls aren’t as common as those for meat and poultry, but they’re worth knowing about. A few years back, the FDA found that 12 percent of spices imported to the U.S. contained “filth” in the matter of human hair, rat feces, bird feathers, and insect casings. In addition, 7 percent of the spices were contaminated with salmonella. That said, many of these were tested before manufacturers cleaned, processed, and treated them to eliminate pathogens and filth.
