To Live Longer, Eat More Nuts
You may want to give walnuts a crack. That’s the word from a recent BMC Medicine study, which showed that adults who ate more than three one-ounce servings of nuts a week had a 39% lower risk of dying from any cause than non-nut eaters; they also had a 40 and 55% less chance of dying from cancer and cardiovascular disease, respectively. And the results were even better for walnut eaters. “Walnuts have a particularly high content of alpha-linoleic acid and phytochemicals, especially in their ‘skin,’ which—along with fiber and minerals—may add to their healthy effect,” says researcher Jordi Salas-Salvadó, M.D., Ph.D.
