You Can’t Work Out If You’re at Risk for a Cardiac Event
Dr. Beckerman says he often hears the excuse: I can’t exercise; I have a family history of heart attacks. “Exercise does increase our risk at that moment but it’s incredibly rare,” he says. And really, exercise is one of the best ways you can protect yourself from future incidents.
If you are recovering from a cardiac event or from a heart surgery, you do need to come back slowly. “It’s normal to want to touch base with your doctor,” he says, but he adds that that’s really only necessary if you want to do something intense, like a triathlon or CrossFit. Walking and light jogging can both be done without worry.
Getting active after a cardiac incident isn’t just about preventing another incident, either. It can also help stave off depression. Statistics show that as many as 33 percent of heart attack survivors develop depression after the event, but that exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programs can help reduce the risk of developing depression.Back to top
