“It’s rare that you would make a rescue with a boat. It would be if you really had to cover some distance to make a save, maybe if a passenger boat capsized on the outside. But it’s a traditional skill of lifeguarding. I’m still really learning to row. Tom Duralek (20-year lifeguard veteran) has a lot of skill. It’s more about experience than muscling it out. But it’s very good for your gripping, forearms, and your entire back.”
Rowing Interval (on a rowing machine if you can’t get a boat)
Do a one minute sprint paddle to simulate rowing through rough surf followed by a 30 second break. Repeat three times. Then repeat three more with an underhanded grip.
