Long hair has been popular since the 1950s when surfers started sporting the look as a sort of anti-fashion statement. Although it was soon abandoned for more buttoned-up hairstyles, the look has had a number of resurgences, like in the past few years. Danny DiMauro, a style consultant for Baxter of California in Los Angeles, said he’s seen a steady uptick in the number of guys who ask how they can achieve longer, beachy locks. “The trend is moving away from that tapered, Don Draper look to a looser style,” he says. “I think guys just want something new but with a similar sense of nostalgia.”
Before moving to the west coast last fall, DiMauro helped Saturdays Surf NYC launch its urban-surf magazine after meeting the brand’s founder, Colin Hunter, in Montauk’s surf scene. “We’re definitely going to see more guys experimenting with longer hair, but I think it’ll stop somewhere around the shoulders,” he says. “Jesus hair is just too much work.” Here’s a round-up of longer hairstyles by some of today’s leading men.
