Technically speaking, anything below the chin is considered long hair. If you’re older and worried that the look isn’t age appropriate, DiMauro says not to sweat it. “There’s a ton of older guys with long hair, like Christian Bale. In my head, he’s the one who manages to pull it off really well.” To make long hair look more sophisticated, ask your barber to layer it around your chin and shoulders for a choppy cut like Bale’s.
Brad Pitt has had his share of hairstyles: a cowboy mullet in 1991’s Thelma and Louise, super short in 1999’s Fight Club, and those frosted bangs in 2001’s The Mexican. But he always seems to return to shoulder-length locks, which have contributed to some of his most iconic looks over the past 30 years. Most recently, he wore his hair long for two years while filming 12 Years a Slave and World War Z. “He’s the best example for nudging guys to experiment with their hair because he can wear his at any length and it looks awesome,” says DiMauro.
Certain men inspire instant hair envy: Bradley Cooper’s infamous curly shag in The Hangover, Robert Redford’s Ivy League cut in All the President’s Men, and Chris Hemsworth’s tousled blonde locks that got a boost in the recent Marvel Studios films Thor and The Avengers. Unlike Brad Pitt, Hemsworth – who grew up surfing in Australia – tends to keep his hair tied back in a bun. If you’re going to try this look pulled back, try to keep your hair at least chin-length so you have enough to grab on to.
Jake Gyllenhaal, seen at a Brooklyn Nets game here, is growing his hair out for an upcoming film called Everest. Based on the true story of a mountaineering disaster, Gyllenhaal plays extreme climbing guide Scott Fischer who died scaling the mountain in 1996. Like Fischer, Gyllenhaal is growing out the classic outdoorsman’s long hair-and-beard pairing. If you’re doing the same, consider keeping your hair tied back like Gyllenhaal to balance things out. There is such a thing as too much scruff.
DiMauro laughs when asked which male celebrity wears long hair best of all. “Easy, he says, “Jared Leto. Yes, he’s a striking individual, but he also does the look differently than anyone else. He’s got that rock ‘n’ roll thing and he can pull of that Jesus look. It’s impressive.” Leto, who plays in a band 30 Seconds to Mars, made headlines last year when he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Dallas Buyers Club. In recent months he’s been wearing his hair dyed ombre – or fading lightly towards the bottom – but DiMauro says natural is the way to go for men considering the look. “It’s adventurous enough as it is.”
With a resume like Dave Grohl’s, you could rock just about any hairstyle you wanted and still look cool. As the drummer for Nirvana, lead singer for the Foo Fighters, and co-founder of Them Crooked Vultures, Grohl is a true rock star – and he has kept the look with long locks worn consistently over his 30-year career.
No matter how many times Nadal changes hairstyles, the Spanish tennis pro will always be known for his signature long, layered, and sweaty mane that, while on the court, he usually kept under a sweatband. When Nadal turned to New York City hairstylist Julien Farel to chop off his hair in 2009, it caused such a stir that newspapers, sports blogs, and Vanity Fair covered the event.
Ashton Kutcher’s take on long hair leans a little younger than the other styles on this list. He typically maintained a severe middle part and tucked stray pieces behind the ears, and the tips would often wing out around his shoulders. The look is considered a bit retro today – a nod to nineties surf and skate culture – but it’s easy to maintain. Just wake up and shower.
It’s possible that more athletes would sport long hair if it was more practical, so we have to hand it to Troy Polamalu. The Steelers safety wears his hair long as a tribute to his Samoan heritage. In 2010, it was announced that Head and Shoulders insured his hair for $1 million.
