If you pay attention to ingredients in your personal use products, you are probably familiar with the controversy over parabens, which include methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and ethylparaben. Specifically, there has been evidence suggesting that paraben exposure might be linked to breast cancer. Parabens are banned in several countries, but not the United States. “Personally and in my recommendations for my clients, I tend to err on the side of avoiding parabens,” says Marin. Both she and Costa advise going paraben-free with your lubricants, especially considering where they are used. Look for preservative-free lubricants to avoid parabens and other potentially carcinogenic preservatives.
