Oil-based lubes — as in cooking oil — are often safe and are even some of the most natural choices you have. Costa recommends olive, grapeseed, and coconut oils. Marin says that extra virgin coconut oil would be her top choice in this category. “It’s not my personal favorite. I don’t actually like the feel of it that much, but a lot of people are just huge coconut oil fanatics,” she says. Coconut oil also has to be warmed up some in advance because it’s somewhat solid. In general, oils can be messy and you have to wash off completely after using them. Also, watch out for those containing glycerin (or other sugar) and preservatives. “Not all ‘cooking oils’ are created the same and can linger within your body, making you susceptible to bacterial growth — so be aware of your body and always go for organic and natural oils,” says Costa. Oil-based lubricants should not be used with latex or rubber products (including condoms) because they can cause tearing and breakage.
