Rule Eight: Be Encouraging, Not Patronizing
This can be tricky to do correctly. Fenrick’s advice, however, is deceptively simple: Just be genuine. If you feel like someone is crushing it on the treadmill, say so. If you think someone has killer push-up form, tell them. If that feels awkward to you, Fenrick suggests this script: “You seem really good at [insert thing]. I’m looking for some advice; do you think you could help me?” Paying someone the compliment of asking for pointers is about as high praise as it gets at the gym.
