Whether you’re big wave surfing in Hawaii or stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) on Lake Tahoe, you’re going to need great balance, core stability, upper body strength (for paddling out), power (for pop-ups), and endurance to look and feel like a pro on your board.
“As much fun as surfing is, it also requires a lot of work, power and strength to get into the proper position,” says New York City-based trainer and triathlon coach Paul Frediani, author of Surf Flex. This five day per week training plan includes total-body strength and mobility workouts that simulate many of the movements you’ll make out on the water and cardio routines that will help you stay active in the sun (and upright on your board) for hours on end.
