Meditation Gets Respect
More research came out this year showing that meditation can boost your mood and help you de-stress. The biggest study came from doctors at Johns Hopkins University who found that meditating for 30 minutes a day reduced symptoms of depression by up to 20 percent and anxiety by 10 percent. That’s roughly equivalent to what antidepressant and antianxiety drugs will do, according to lead researcher Dr. Madhav Goyal. He suggests practicing meditation along with other stress- and depression-busting techniques, including meds when they are necessary. But you don’t have be down in the dumps or anxiety-ridden to benefit from meditation. Doing even just 10 or 20 minutes a day, whether in the mornings or midday when you need a break, can calm your brain and body, recharge your energy, and make you more productive, says Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, author of From Fatigued to Fantastic.
