Staying fit hasn’t always been easy for Tyrese Gibson, whose first book, How to Get Out of Your Own Way, is now in stores. Here’s how he conquered unwanted pounds and how you can too.
LOOK FOR YOUR TRIGGER
Experts say psychology plays a huge part in overeating. It did for Gibson, whose weight yo-yoed early in his career. “I used to eat everything in sight because I couldn’t as a kid,” he says. “My family couldn’t afford it—we were broke and hungry. Once I was making money, no one was gonna tell me to watch what I was eating. I only recently connected the two.”
HAVE FAITH IN YOURSELF
“The way you look is a direct reflection of your thoughts,” says the star. Before you can start any weight-loss program, you need to believe in yourself and know you can be successful. “I struggled for years with my focus. I got lazy and started enjoying the fruits of my labor too much. When I changed my mind, it helped me change my life—and how I look.”
“Today I run five miles a day, five days a week, and I lift weights. As long as I can get to five miles per day, I feel great. It doesn’t matter if you’re walking or running, tell yourself you have to complete the five miles.”
BAG THE PIGS
If your buddies or co-workers gorge themselves on crap, look for a healthier crew. “You can often tell the way your career or life is going by looking at the five people you spend the most time with. Your inner circle is a direct reflection of who you are. Change those people—if you aren’t all on the same page—and it will change your life,” he says.
FIND TRUE MOTIVATION
A halfhearted effort leads to only halfhearted results, so do what you have to do to ensure that you put in the work. “You are not a charity case, and you don’t need a pep talk. Instead, think about how badly you want it. If you really have a problem with your life, you can find the energy to do something about it,” says Gibson.
