Watch: Matt Damon Kicks Serious Ass in the New ‘Jason Bourne’ Trailer

Matt Damon stars in the upcoming 'Jason Bourne.'

It’s been 14 years since Jason Bourne woke up on an Italian fishing boat, utterly devoid of memory but in possession of a very particular set of skills uniquely suited for both avoiding assassins and making adrenaline-engorged action movies. Since The Bourne Identity, Bourne has managed to reconstruct most of his past while finding new opportunities to hone his skills.

But “remembering everything doesn’t mean you know everything,” as Julia Stiles’ character insists, thereby setting the stage for a new set of reveals and chase scenes—c’mon, as if there wouldn’t be chase scenes—in Jason Bourne, the fifth and least creatively named flick in Universal’s franchise.

Aside from the fact that Matt Damon is even more incredibly jacked than before, the new Jason Bourne trailer is a little lean on plot details—note to Hollywood: this is perfectly okay—but from what we’ve noticed, it looks like Bourne is still very much a vigilante, with only a fleeting interest in working alongside government operatives. (Side note to all you aspiring government spy agents: Filing all your black ops files under a folder named “Black Ops” is only marginally more secure than keeping all the porn on your computer in a desktop folder labeled “stuff.”)

It looks like the co-stars of 2012’s The Bourne Legacy have bowed out—Edward Norton, you will be missed—but we can look forward to an appearance from Alicia Vikander, who was so compelling in Ex Machina and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., as a government agent with a sharp understanding of Bourne’s motives. Stiles joins Damon as an operative of some kind, while Tommy Lee Jones plays a role he could probably do in his sleep as a stone-faced, gravel-voiced suit.

Directed by Paul Greengrass (who also directed 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum and 2004’s The Bourne Supremacy), Jason Bourne is set to explode into theaters on July 29.
