If mom’s home cooking and your gym’s curtailed holiday hours have hijacked your healthy habits in the last two weeks, you’re probably lounging around right about now and plotting how you’ll get back on track in 2013. Problem is, that fired-up feeling might not last very long. Of the two-thirds of Americans who set a fitness-focused New Year’s resolution, 73 percent give up on their goals to lose weight, get fit or train for an event within six weeks, according to a new study from Harris Interactive and Bodybuilding.com.
Why so much slacking? The reasons cited include: It’s too tough to stick to a diet or workout regimen and “it’s difficult to get back on track after a slip-up,” along with the old standby—”I just don’t have enough free time to acheive my fitness goals.”
We say: Sounds like a whole bunch of unproductive whining! Take those excuses and kick their ass by planning for real fitness success in 2013. Both Mensfitness.com and our partner Bodybuilding.com are rolling out easy-to-follow fitness programs to help you stick to your goals past spring. Here’s what we’re planning to help you set—and REACH—your fitness goals this year.
First up, Bodybuilding.com is taking pity on our occasionally lazy ways by dangling $50,000 cash incentive in front our faces. That’s the grand prize in the site’s $100,000 Transformation Challenge sponsored by Dymatize Nutrition. To get yourself into the running, you need to register by January 31 and pick a 12-week muscle-building or fat-loss training program, which includes workouts, diet plans, and motivational tips from expert trainers. After three months of working your butt off, a panel of judges will select a winner based on greatest physical improvement (fat loss or muscle gain) and how you chronicled your journey toward a better body.
And don’t worry, you’ll be able to keep tabs on what your competition is up to. Signing up for the $100,000 Transformation Challenge gives you access to BodySpace, a health and fitness social network of more than 1.5 million members. Use the space to swap tips and track your workouts and progress toward your goal. Need some inspiration? Check out last year’s winners, Laura McGraw and Halid Shokunbi.
Not sure if you’re ready to commit to a full 12-week program? On January 1, Men’s Fitness is launching a four-week program designed to help you hit one of these goals:
- Lose 5 Pounds of Fat
- Put On 5 Pounds of Muscle
- Complete an Adventure Race
- Get Healthier in 2013
- Update Your Style
