Yoga may help reduce symptoms in people with major depressive disorder, suggests a recent study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.
Researchers followed 30 people with symptoms of major depressive disorder over the course of 12 weeks, with participants in the study ranging in age from 18-64 years. Those who took part in three yoga classes per week during the study were more likely to show improvement, based on results gathered from a Depression Inventory measure that was used to gauge their symptoms.
The yoga and coherent breathing routine caused a significant decline in depressive symptoms over the course of the 12-week study, which is the latest to suggest that yoga can help improve mental health.
“The practical findings for this integrative health intervention is that it worked for participants who were both on and off antidepressant medications,” The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine Editor-in-Chief John Weeks told Eurekalert. “For those time-pressed, the two times per week dose also performed well.”
