The Unexpected Evolution of Electric Fireplaces
In a fireplace industry with competing perspectives on wood-burning, gas, and electric fireplace designs, manufacturers of water vapor electric fireplaces are poised to redefine how we experience our homes. One of those companies, Aquafire, utilizes cutting-edge water vapor technology to turn tap water into realistic flame effects. "Our fireplaces produce incredibly realistic 3D flames using only tap water, creating a mesmerizing effect without the need for fossil fuels, special venting, or non-combustible materials," explains Stefan Lewinger, Chief Revenue Officer of Aquafire. "Aquafire ensures a completely safe experience, free from the typical liabilities associated with open, actual flames. Operating solely on regular tap water, there's no need for non-combustible materials, affording you the freedom to choose materials and finishes according to your preferences." Traditional fireplaces can't do this.
He continues, adding "Our fireplaces generate no heat, enabling use 365 days a year, even in the heat of summer. The UV-C lighting in the tank ensures the vapor is free from bacteria, viruses, spores, microorganisms, and airborne pathogens. Installation is easy and quick, and with no odors, smoke, or soot, you enjoy a 100% clean flame."
The Details
- MSRP between $1,395 (Aquafire Lite) to $3,995 (Aquafire Pro)
- Available in 20-, 40-, and 60-inch sizes
- Low-voltage (costs pennies a day to operate)
- Does not produce heat (the perfect fireplace for summertime or warmer climates)
- Systems can produce a natural orange flame color (Aquafire), or 30+ preset LED colors (Aquafire Pro)
How do water vapor fireplace systems work?
- Water is added to a fireplace insert. Aquafire's water tank can be filled manually, or automatically with the connection to your water line. Filled manually, the flame in a steam fireplace insert can burn for up to 20 hours.
- When the fireplace is turned on, water is turned into vapor. Water interacts with a ceramic disc in the ultrasonic transducer which vibrates the molecules into a fine, "web-like mist."
- The mist is circulated with fans. The water mist (water vapor) is pushed through a diffuser vent backlit by a LED light strip to create the illusion of flame. No gas fumes, no hot flames, no risks associated with fire safety.
UV Disinfectant Capability
While most real flame fireplaces threaten indoor air quality, Aquafire's innovative use of UV-C lighting actually seeks to improve it. "[The UV-C lighting ]within the tank sets it apart by ensuring the vapor is free from bacteria, viruses, spores, and other harmful pollutants and microorganisms," explains Lewinger. "This advanced technology not only provides a stunning visual effect but also contributes to a healthier environment by preventing the growth of pathogens, including COVID-19. With Aquafire, you can enjoy the beauty of a fireplace while maintaining a clean and hygienic space."
