The 2014 World Cup has been filled with amazing soccer performances, including last-minute winners, goalkeepers who resemble brick walls, and penalty kick drama. However, yesterday we saw something that the quadrennial festival of “football” rarely features, especially in a semi-final game. Brazil was embarrassed as 200 million of her sons and daughters looked on, with Germany showing no mercy in a humiliating 7-1 defeat. This isn’t the first time we’ve cringed as one team or player crushes the competition. Check out five of the most recent one-sided annihilations in sports.
1. World Cup Semi Finals: Brazil vs. Germany
Brazil fell extremely short without star players Neymar and Silva as Germany dominated the match to reach the World Cup final. With Germany scoring five goals within the first 30 minutes, Brazil crumbled to a 7-1 heartbreaking defeat.
2. UFC 175: Ronda Rousey vs. Alexis Davis
It took only 16 seconds for Rousey to finish Davis, earning her the UFC 175 “Performance of the Night” award.
3. Super Bowl XLVIII: Denver Broncos vs. Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks made Peyton Manning and his much-heralded Denver offense look like rookies. With former Men’s Fitness cover guy Russell Wilson at the helm, the Seahawks crushed the Broncos 43-8 to become Super Bowl champions for the first time in franchise history.
4. NBA 2014 Finals: San Antonio Spurs vs. Miami Heat Game 5
The Spurs won the Larry O’Brien NBA trophy in devastating style this year when they walloped the Miami Heat 4-1, including a 104-87 win in game 5.
5. Wimbledon 2014 Final: Petra Kvitova vs. Eugenie Bouchard
Kvitova dominated Bouchard en route to her second Wimbledon ladies singles title. The Czech star blasted her Canadian opponent 6-3, 6-0 in 55 minutes, which was reportedly the fastest women’s singles final since 1983.
