6. Be Strategic
The months between December and March present all sorts of challenges outside of frostbite. The surf is bigger, windier, and more tide-dependent. Powerful winter storms make for steeper waves. Consider surfing higher tides, finding beaches sheltered from the wind, and spots that have a point or channel for paddling out. Consider daylight, too. For example, during the winter, the sun sets at 4:30 p.m. on Long Island, NY. Factor in your commute, how long it takes to suit up, and warmup. Give yourself ample time to get ready.
