What went through your mind when you first realized you’d be joining Dwyane Wade and LeBron James in Miami?
I started thinking about Magic and Bird and M.J., about the dynasties that happened before. It’s kind of surreal because I’ve never been mentioned with “championship.” We have the chance to have a great decade of basketball.
Did the move affect your training?
I’m not going to change anything. I wouldn’t ask them to change anything, either. LeBron is a two-time reigning MVP, so it would be kind of foolish to be like, “hey, we should do this now,” You do the same things you’ve been doing that made you successful.
How’s your diet?
I have a chef now. It’s funny, I called him and he was like, “Is fish OK?” Fish is cool. “Salmon?” That’s cool. “Want some rice with it? Brown rice? I’m like, “Ugh, yeah I want brown rice.” I figured I need to work on my discipline because that’s what it takes to be really good at what we do.
You’re very lean. Have you ever felt as though you needed to gain weight for the NBA?
I’m always looking to improve my game, but I found out that weight doesn’t equal strength. I put on 20 pounds last year. At one point I weighed 250 pounds, and something wasn’t right. I couldn’t run, my knees swelled up at the beginning of the season, and then I couldn’t shoot like I wanted to. My finesse game just wasn’t the same. I think people make assumptions just because I’m thin, like, “Oh, he can’t play down low.” It doesn’t matter how skinny you are, it just matters who wants it the most.
