Conor McGregor Announces Early Retirement With Cryptic Twitter Post

Conor McGregor made a surprising announcement on Tuesday, writing on Twitter that he is planning to “retire young.”

The post was shocking to most around the MMA world, as McGregor is scheduled to fight in UFC 200 in a rematch with Nate Diaz on July 9. Does the post mean that the fight is now off? Or was McGregor messing around with his opponents’ head months before the fight?

UPDATE: McGregor will not be fighting Diaz at UFC 200:

John Kavanagh, McGregor’s coach at Straight Blast Gym in Dublin, has apparently confirmed McGregor’s impending departure from MMA in an equally cryptic tweet.

One answer to the mystery could come from an incident that happened earlier in April involving Joao Carvalho, who died from injuries sustained in a fight. McGregor was at that fight in Dublin to watch Carvalho, and a week later wrote on Facebook: “To see a young man doing what he loves, competing for a chance at a better life, and then to have it taken away is truly heartbreaking.”

Nate Diaz had a response to the McGregor tweet, writing:

So will the show go on? Only McGregor knows the answer to that.
