Get ready for a new Hall of Fame, specifically the Baseball Card Hall of Fame. eBay announced the inaugural class of players on Thursday, unveiling 10 legendary players who have high-value cards and are considered to be some of the most influential in baseball history.
First class of the eBay Baseball Card Hall of Fame includes “The Closer” Mariano Rivera, “The Fan Favorite” Ken Griffey, Jr., The “‘K’ING” Nolan Ryan, “The Midsummer MVP” Stan Musial, “The Fielder’s Choice” Cal Ripken Jr., “The Godfather” Babe Ruth, “The King Without a Ring” Ted Williams, “The Golden Glove” Ozzie Smith, “The MVP” Mickey Mantle, and “The Hustler” Pete Rose. “Baseball card collecting is viewed by many as America’s second-favorite pastime, and every fan remembers the thrill of finding the most sought-after cards of their day. We created the Baseball Card Hall of Fame to recognize those who have shaped the collecting experience across their respective generations,” said Sam Bright, vice president of merchandising, eBay North America, in a press release. “These players’ cards have become an iconic part of baseball culture, prized by collectors around the world for their history and value.”
Rivera himself was in person when eBay unveiled the new class at an event in New York City at the Crown Shy restaurant. Rivera, who is going into the Baseball Hall of Fame his year and was the first-ever unanimous player voted in, was given the “Diamond Award,” which is given to a player for their achievements, service on and off the field, and their performance on eBay. Over the years, Rivera has built up his Mariano Rivera Foundation into a successful foundation that helps people in the New York City area and around the world.
“I love that eBay started the Baseball Card Hall of Fame. As a player, you have fans who come out to the games and they’re incredible, then you have collectors who bring the game home with their distinct passion,” said Rivera. “The exclusive merchandise we’ve put together with eBay is for real fans, whether they’re Yankee die-hards or just genuine collectors. Most importantly, this collection creates incredible resources for underprivileged youth and their families.”
Steve Wymer, eBay’s Chief Communications Officer, presented Rivera with the award and spoke about his love of baseball cards as a kid and why eBay wanted to create this special class. “There are 200 million buyers out there and with this class, purpose meets commerce for eBay in bringing these cards to fans,” Wymer said. “On eBay when you search for your favorite player, these will be highlighted and we hope to do additional players and classes in the future. We want to help fans find the cards they’re looking for. From cards in low to high price ranges, eBay offers something for everybody and every type of fan and collector. We’re honored to work with Mariano Rivera on this as well.”
As part of his work with eBay on the Hall of Fame class, the company is also putting together a special collection in partnership with Rivera and Steiner Sports. The company has announced the “eBay x Mariano Rivera Collection,” which has a number of special pieces of Rivera-related memorabilia that people can shop for.
Some of the merchandise includes signed pieces, unique memorabilia, hand-signed official baseballs, jerseys and hats, autographed photographs of epic moments, flashy framed signs and wall art, 2019 Hall of Fame memorabilia, and plenty more. On top of that, 42 items—picked because of Rivera’s former jersey number 42—will be auctioned off with 100 percent of proceeds benefiting the Mariano Rivera Foundation through June 16.
Among that special group of pieces includes game-worn jerseys, signed and game-used MLB bases, signed Yankees baseball hats, a signed baseball from the 2013 game against the Toronto Blue Jays, and a personalized video recorded by Mariano Rivera. You can check out the collection at eBay.com/MarianoRivera.
