Five Questions With Alex Rodriguez

Few athletes are as polarizing as New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. He’s a fitness fanatic who’s meticulous about his diet. MF caught up with A-Rod to see how he’s able to maintain a healthy diet with his grueling schedule.

As a big leaguer, you play 162 games per year. What do you eat when you are on the go?
Pretty much the same thing—egg whites, oatmeal, chicken breast, brown rice, fish, steak, that kind of stuff. No butter, sugar or oil, none of that craziness. And usually some steamed vegetables. If I am feeling low on energy, I always have a sweet potato.

What about your breakfast—do you keep it simple too?
Six egg whites every morning, oatmeal, a glass of Vita Coco, and that’s it.

How did you end up teaming up with Vita Coco to become their new spokesman?
I drink it every morning with breakfast to stay hydrated. It has 15 times more potassium than any other sports drink out there and a lot of electrolytes. I have all my teammates drinking it.

Training wise, is there anything you wish you could go back and tell a younger A-Rod he could have done differently in the gym?
No, nothing at all. It’s an evolution. You keep learning. You learn from your mistakes, you learn from different training philosophies, but everything happens for a reason and it has gotten me to where I am today.

You’re a very disciplined athlete. What motivates you?
It’s about reaching your ultimate potential. Every day you wake up you really want to reach your potential. Of course, there’s a fear of failure too. I think anyone who has had success on any level fears that.
