How Eddie Lacy Slimmed Down and Got in Shape for the 2016 Season

Eddie Lacy is ready for his close-up.

The Green Bay Packers running back officially debuted his new slim figure after the team held their first OTA practices on Tuesday—and the reviews were very good. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy criticized Lacy at the end of the 2015-16 season for allowing himself to get overweight—but it appears he got the message loud and clear.

Lacy worked with P90X founder Tony Horton over the offseason to slim down—reportedly losing 15 to 20 pounds in the process.

McCarthy told the running back that he couldn’t “play at the weight he played at this year,” but he was singing a different tune this week. “So far, so good,” McCarthy told ESPN.

Horton gave some details to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on what Lacy did during the winter to get back in shape—and it included a lot of training not related to football.

“We did P90X, we did P90X2, we did 22 Minute Hard Corps, we did a lot of my personal workouts,” Horton said. “We did pullups and pushups until we couldn’t lift our arms. We did everything. I had him do plyometrics twice a week. And then just pure cardio just to burn calories once a week. We had three days a week that were heavy on the plyometrics and the heart, lungs and legs. Then the other days of the week it was more resistance—body weight, functional fitness, balance, speed, range of motion and things like that. A lot of core work, which was really important for him.”

No form of training was off the table for Horton and Lacy.

“There was everything. I mean everything,” Horton said. “I’ve been training folks for 35 years, and so my perspective is the more I got him out of his comfort zone the better. I wasn’t here to run 40s with him or plays or anything like that. I wasn’t here to do football stuff. I mean, I made him do yoga. We went to boxing classes.”

The running back had the worst season of his three-year career in 2015—and his weight was mostly to blame. Lacy was inconsistent and finished with just 758 rushing yards and three touchdowns, a far cry from his rookie season when he set highs with 1,178 yards and 11 scores.

Lacy debuted his svelte figure on social media earlier in the year while hanging with fellow Alabama alums Derrick Henry, Trent Richardson, and Mark Ingram, but this was the the first chance to show it off in an open team practice.



Lacy has made progress, but still has some weight to lose—ESPN reports that the running back is still in “in the 240s.” Fortunately for Lacy, there’s plenty of time for him to get it down before the regular season starts in September.

Lacy is hoping to return to his Pro Bowl form this year—and so are the Packers.
