“A Moment to Tell Your Grandchildren”: Liverpool Stuns Dortmund in Epic Comeback

They’ll be talking about this one for a long time.

Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund faced off Thursday night in a crucial match to determine who’d advance to the Europa League semifinals. The Reds entered needing at least a tie to advance after scoring a crucial away goal in the 1-1 first leg in Germany. Liverpool also had the advantage of playing at Anfield in front of a friendly crowd. Things looked promising for Jurgen Klopp’s new team as they took the pitch against his old one.

Then the game began.

The Reds stumbled badly in the first half, allowing two quick goals within minutes of each other and falling behind 2-0 heading into halftime. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the goals for Dortmund, giving the club a seemingly insurmountable 3-1 aggregate lead in the series.

Enter Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The former Dortmund boss—who many Dortmunders still consider a fan favorite—gave his Liverpool troops a rousing speech at halftime, telling his players to “give their grandchildren something to remember.”

Liverpool exited the locker room with a spring in their step. It showed: In the 48th minute, a nimble Divock Origi drew blood, making the score 2-1.

But just as the Reds were starting to get some momentum, Dortmund sunk a dagger. Marco Reus found the goal in the 57th minute, giving the visitors 3-1 lead in the match and a seemingly insurmountable 4-2 aggregate advantage.

But the Reds weren’t ready to give up on the game yet. With 25 minutes left, Liverpool’s dynamic midfielder Philippe Coutinho took charge and put in a score for Liverpool to cut the aggregate lead to 4-3. The aggregate still looked out of reach, but a tie in the game was at least plausible.

Could they do it again? THEY COULD! Mamadou Sakho connected on a header 13 minutes later, tying the match at 3-3 and sending Anfield into a frenzy.

The 90th minute. Stoppage time. The match tied. Liverpool had almost locked up the win on aggregate, if they could just hold on a bit longer.

Then: BOOM!

Dejan Lovren—yes, freaking Dejan Lovren—scores!

The final goal made the club broadcasters go crazy. Take a listen:

And with that, the epic comeback was complete.
