Like a fit-person nightmare come to life, Dutch cyclist Tom Dumoulin made a frantic-looking pit stop during stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia on Tuesday, May 23, when he promptly tore off his cycling kit to take a dump on the side of the road. Listen at the end for the announcer saying, “¡Madre mia!”
Maybe the best part, besides the universal wash of “athletes are just like us!” that comes from moments like this, is how much of a chill dude Dumoulin was when asked about it later. Look at the shrugs.

Even though Russian cyclist Ilnur Zakarin used the opportunity to vie for Dumoulin’s position — maybe a dick move, since it’s common courtesy to pause if another racer crashes, but that’s up for debate — Dumoulin still leads the pack at the end of Stage 17. With four stages to go, and Columbia’s Nairo Quintana just 31 seconds behind him, Dumoulin better watch what he eats.
All that said, Dumoulin can add “took a literal shit in the middle of the race, still lead” to his accolades. Even if he doesn’t win the Giro overall, that has to count for something.
